Portrait of 6826 Private (Pte) Milton Donald Searle, 50th Battalion from Renmark, South Australia. A 21 year old clerk prior to enlisting on 11 September 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 22nd Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 7 November 1916 aboard HMAT Afric. While undergoing further training in England, he transferred to the 70th Battalion and proceeded with them to France. He then transferred to the 50th Battalion in Belgium on 1 October 1917 and was killed in action at Broodseinde Ridge on 13 October 1917. Pte Searle is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres, Belgium with others who have no known grave. Two older brothers also served with the 50th Battalion. 3894 Private Cecil Ernest Searle returned to Australia but 3951 Pte Spencer Roy Searle was killed in action on 16 August 1916 in France [see image P09291.067].
