Description

Portrait of 3625 Private (Pte) Thomas Chapman, 50th Battalion from Clarendon, South Australia. A 32 year old farmer prior to enlisting on 17 April 1917, he embarked for overseas with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 4 August 1917 aboard HMAT Themistocles. Following further training in England, he proceeded to France where he joined the 50th Battalion in the field on 26 January 1918. Three months later, he was wounded in action at Villers-Bretonneux on 25 April and evacuated to England for medical treatment. On recovering, he rejoined the battalion in the field on 1 August and was killed in action near Bray, France on 16 August 1918. Pte Chapman is buried in the Beacon Cemetery Sailly-Laurette, France.
