Studio portrait of 2124 Private (Pte) Douglas Gordon Johnston, 50th Battalion from Oakbank, South Australia. A 22 year old clerk prior to enlisting on 19 August 1915, he served in Australia before embarking for overseas with the 4th Reinforcements of the 50th Battalion from Adelaide on 12 August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat. Following further training in England, he joined the 50th Battalion in France on 28 January 1917. After being wounded in action at Noreuil, France on 2 April 1917, he was evacuated to England for medical treatment. Pte Johnston died of heart failure at the 1st Eastern Hospital Cambridge and is buried in the Cambridge City Cemetery, Cambridgeshire, England.
