Description

Portrait of 4244 Private (Pte) Harry Walter Osborne, 50th Battalion from Maylands, South Australia. A 21 year old cabinet maker prior to enlisting on 25 August 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 13th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 11 January 1916 aboard HMAT Borda. After arriving in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion and proceeded to France with them in June 1916. Pte Osborne was killed in action near Mouquet Farm, France on 16 August 1916 and buried near where he fell, however after the war, his grave could not be located and he is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
