A 21 year old clerk prior to enlisting on 4 August 1915, he embarked for overseas as a Private with the 11th Reinforcements of the 10th Battalion from Adelaide on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Benalla. Following further training in Egypt, he transferred to the 50th Battalion and was promoted to Corporal in March 1916. After arriving in France, he was promoted to Sergeant in July 1916.
