Studio portrait of 1194 Sergeant (Sgt) Frederic Joscelyn Colless, 32nd Battalion. A traveller from Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, prior to enlistment as a Private, he was promoted to Corporal and then appointed a Lance Sergeant before he embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT Geelong on 18 November 1915 for Suez. On 26 May 1916 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Sgt Colless was reported missing in action on 20 July 1916 near Fleurbaix, France; he was subsequently reported as wounded in action and the British Red Cross Society (Berlin Branch) records that he died of wounds at Lille, France, on 23 July 1916 while a prisoner of war in German hands. He was aged 37 years.
