Studio portrait of 602 Private (Pte) John Bert Riedel, 32nd Battalion. A fruit preserver of Nuriootpa, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked aboard HMAT Geelong on 18 November 1915 for Suez. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Pte Riedel was wounded in action near Fleurbaix, France, on 20 July 1916 and died of these wounds the following day in the 1st Canadian Casualty Clearing Station. He was aged 27 years.
