Studio portrait of 1299 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Francis David Johnstone, 32nd Battalion. A contractor from Osborne Park, Western Australia, prior to enlistment as a Private, he embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT Geelong on 18 November 1915 for Suez. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 26 May 1916 before his battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, in June 1916. L Cpl Johnstone was reported missing in action on 20 July 1916 following the Battle of Fromelles. He was aged 33 years. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the VC Corner Australian Cemetery Memorial, Fromelles, France. His younger brother 3580 Private William Johnstone was also killed in action near Roisel, France, on 7 September 1918.
