Cpl Emery, a gardener, and Pte Emery, a motorman, both from Magill, South Australia, embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT Geelong on 18 November 1915 for Suez. Cpl Emery was appointed Lance Sergeant (L Sgt) in May 1916. Their battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. L Sgt Emery was killed in action on 19 July 1916 during the Battle of Fromelles and is buried in the Rue Petillon Military Cemetery, France. He was aged 20 years.
