Studio portrait of 5371 Private (Pte) Walter William Haines, 32nd Battalion. A farmer from Nairne, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 17th Reinforcements from Adelaide aboard HMAT Aeneas on 11 April 1916 for England. Following training in England he joined his battalion near Hazebrouck, France in October 1916. Pte Haines was wounded in action near Bapaume, France, on 6 March 1917 and was evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation before rejoining his battalion in late October 1917. Pte Haines was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium, on 27 November 1917 and is buried in the La Plus Douve Farm Cemetery. He was aged 30 years.
