Description

Portrait of 1211 Corporal (Cpl) John Baird, 32nd Battalion. A railway clerk from Cottesloe, Western Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT Geelong on 18 November 1915 for Suez. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Cpl Baird was wounded in action at the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916 and was evacuated to the 32nd Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, France, for treatment and convalescence before rejoining his unit on 7 February 1917. He was promoted to the rank of Temporary Sergeant on 31 October 1917. Sergeant Baird was killed in action near Messines, Belgium, on 1 December 1917 and is buried in the Messines Ridge British Cemetery. He was aged 38 years.
