Description

Studio portrait of 3189 Private (Pte) Abraham Thomas, 32nd Battalion. A surveyor from Moonta, South Australia, prior to enlistment as a private, he embarked with the 7th Reinforcements from Adelaide aboard HMAT Malakuta on 27 June 1916 for Devonport, England. Whilst in training with the 8th Training Battalion he was promoted to Corporal and appointed Acting Sergeant on 24 January 1917. When proceeding to the Western Front, France, he reverted to his permanent rank of Corporal before joining his unit in action near Lille. On 5 October 1917 he was appointed to the rank of Lance Sergeant. L Sgt Thomas was killed in action near Zonnebeke, Belgium, on 13 October 1917 and is buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery. He was aged 26 years.
