Description

Studio portrait of 3315 Private (Pte) William Arthur Edwin Smith, 32nd Battalion. A labourer from Watervale, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 7th Reinforcements aboard HMAT Malakuta on 27 June 1916 for Devonport, England. Following training in England he joined his battalion on the Western Front near Albert, France on 9 February 1917. Pte Smith was killed in action at Polygon Wood, Belgium, on 1 October 1917. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. He was aged 21 years.
