Studio portrait of 4118 Private (Pte) Benjamin Samson, 32nd Battalion. A coal miner from Collie, Western Australia, prior to enlistment he embarked with the 10th Reinforcements from Fremantle aboard HMAT Port Melbourne on 28 October 1916 for Devonport, England. Following training in England he joined his battalion in the field near Bapaume, France, in early March 1917 and was appointed Lance Corporal (L Cpl) a month later. L Cpl Samson was killed in action at Polygon Wood on 30 September 1917 and is buried in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. He was aged 32 years.
