Studio portrait of 2111 Private (Pte) Cyril Gordon George Smith, 32nd Battalion. A cabinet maker from Prospect, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 February 1916 aboard HMAT Miltiades for Suez. The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during July 1916. He was wounded in action at the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916 and was initially evacuated to the 9th Red Cross Hospital in Calais, France. As he was not responding to treatment he was evacuated to England in August 1916 to the Royal County Surrey Hospital. Pte Smith died of these wounds on 15 December 1916 and is buried in the Guildford (Stoke) Old Cemetery. He was aged 22 years.
