Portrait of 2184 Private (Pte) Samuel Hough, 51st Battalion. A brickmaker from Perth, Western Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 4th Reinforcements from Fremantle on 9 August 1916 aboard HMAT Miltiades for Plymouth, England. Following training he proceeded to France where he was hospitalised with laryngitis on two occasions and was then transferred to the 32nd Battalion where he was taken on strength on 25 February 1917. Pte Hough was killed in action near Albert, France, on 4 March 1917. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 24 years.
