Studio portrait of 2619 Private (Pte) Richard Cornelius Griffiths, 32nd Battalion. A plumber from Wayville, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Adelaide on 25 March 1916 aboard HMAT Shropshire for Suez. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France in June 1916. Pte Griffiths was wounded in action on the first occasion at the Battle of Fromelles and was evacuated to England for treatment, recuperation and furlough before rejoining his unit near Albert, France, on 21 January 1917. He was wounded in action on the second occasion near Fricourt, France, with a shrapnel wound to the arm and the effects of gas for which he was treated in the area and rejoined his unit four weeks later. Pte Griffiths died of accidental injuries received in the field during training near Albert, France, on 25 July 1917 and is buried in the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension, France. He was aged 24 years.
