Portrait of 5203 Private (Pte) Walter David Terlich, 16th Battalion. A farmer from Kattanning, Western Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 16th Reinforcements from Fremantle on 31 March 1916 aboard HMAT Shropshire for Suez. The 16th Battalion relocated to England in early June 1916. Following training in England he proceeded to France and was transferred to the 32nd Battalion in late September 1916. Pte Terlich was wounded in action on the first occasion on 29 November 1916 and was evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation before rejoining the 32nd Battalion near Poperinge, Belgium in early November 1917. Pte Terlich was killed in action near Corbie, France, on 24 June 1918 and is buried in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery. He was aged 24 years.
