Studio portrait of 1287 Private (Pte) Frank Vernon Hill, 32nd Battalion. A farm hand from Bakers Hill, Western Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Adelaide on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong for Suez. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Pte Hill was wounded in action on 20 July 1916 at the Battle of Fromelles and was evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation before rejoining his unit two months later. He was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) in early December 1917 and at the end of the month was attached to the 4th Training Battalion in England before returning to France on 10 May 1918. Cpl Hill was killed in action near Corbie, France, and is buried in the Beacon Cemetery, Sailly-Laurette. He was aged 26 years. His older brother, 7753 Pte Thomas Henry Hill, 16th Battalion, died of wounds received in action near Villers-Bretonneux on 4 July 1918 aged 29 years. His eldest brother 349 Pte Frederick James Hill, 16th Battalion was wounded in action at Gallipoli on 28 April 1915 and was evacuated to England for treatment before returning to Australia for discharge. However he returned to duty, re-embarked with the 20th Reinforcements and was wounded in action a second time in France when he was evacuated to England for treatment prior to repatriation to Australia for discharge on 17 September 1918.
