Description

Portrait of 2 Company Quartermaster Sergeant (CQMS) Gilbert Harper Richards, 32nd Battalion. A civil servant from Clarence Park, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he was promoted from Private to CQMS within two months of joining the battalion and embarked from Adelaide on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong for Suez. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, in June 1916. From July 1917 to January 1918 he was attached to the 8th and the 15th Training Battalion in England where he served as the Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant before reverting to CQMS on rejoining the 32nd Battalion in February 1918. CQMS Richards was killed in action near Corbie, France, on 24 June 1918 and is buried in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery. He was aged 26 years.
