Description

Studio portrait of 500 Private (Pte) Alexander George Gill, 32nd Battalion. A blacksmith from Mile End, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Adelaide on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong for Suez. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Pte Gill was wounded in action at the Battle of Fromelles in July 1916 and was evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation before rejoining his unit on the Western Front in late June 1917. Pte Gill was killed in action near Messines, Belgium, on 19 March 1918. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Ypres, Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium. He was aged 24 years
