Studio portrait of 3620 Pte William Frederick Simpson, 32nd Battalion. A station hand from North Adelaide, South Australia, prior to enlistment in the 8th Reinforcements, he embarked from Adelaide on 12 August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat for Devonport, England. Following training in England he joined his battalion on the Western Front, near Fricourt, France in early February 1917. Pte Simpson was wounded in action near Morlancourt, France, on 29 July 1918, died of these wounds 3 days later and is buried in the Vignacourt British Cemetery. He was aged 23 years.
