Studio portrait of 438 Private (Pte) Herbert James Bampton, 32nd Battalion. A horse driver from Parkside, South Australia, he embarked from Adelaide on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong for Suez. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. Pte Bampton was wounded in action at the Battle of Fromelles, was treated in Boulogne and rejoined his unit in mid-September. In December 1916 he was hospitalised with trench feet and evacuated to England for treatment, recuperation and furlough and attachment to the training units in England for six months before rejoining the 32nd Battalion in late October 1917. Pte Bampton was killed in action near St Qentin, France, on 8 August 1918. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 47 years.
