Description

Studio portrait of 2174 Private (Pte) Harold John Wortley, 32nd Battalion. A labourer from Yatala, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 February 1916 aboard HMAT Miltiades for Suez. The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France in June 1916. Pte Wortley was wounded in action at the Battle of Fromelles and was evacuated to England for treatment and furlough before rejoining his unit in France in late December 1916. Pte Wortley was wounded in action on a second occasion on 3 September 1918 near Peronne, France, and died of these wounds later that day. He was aged 30 years.
