Studio portrait of 667 Corporal (Cpl) Ernest Cockrell, 32nd Battalion. A labourer from Adelaide, South Australia, he embarked on 18 November 1915 aboard HMAT Geelong, for Suez where he was appointed Lance Corporal (L Cpl). The battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, during June 1916. L Cpl Cockrell was wounded in action during the Battle of Fromelles on 19 July 1916 and was evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation. He then attended the School of Musketry at Tidworth followed by eight months on the Instructional Staff of the Training Battalions at Tidworth and Codford with the rank of Acting Sergeant. In November 1917 he reverted to the rank of L Cpl and proceeded to France to rejoin his unit which was then resting behind the lines at Desvres, France. L Cpl Cockrell was congratulated in the Australian Corps Headquarters Routine Order No 42 for his action on the night of 28-29 July 1918 whilst in charge of a Lewis Gun. He was promoted to Corporal on 2 August 1918. Cpl Cockrell was killed in action near Bellicourt, France, on 29 September 1918 and is buried in the Bellicourt British Cemetery. He was aged 26 years.
