Studio portrait of 1918 Private (Pte) John Lionel Greenshields, 50th Battalion. A farmer from Mannum, South Australia, prior to enlistment he embarked from Adelaide on 13 July 1916 with the3rd Reinforcements aboard HMAT Seang Bee for Plymouth, England. After training in England he joined his unit on the Western Front, France in early February 1917. He was wounded in action on 2 April 1917 and evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation before rejoining the battalion in early July 1917. In early September 1917 Pte Greenshields was initially diagnosed with peritonitis and evacuated to England where tests revealed that he was suffering from severe tuberculosis. Pte Greenshields was returned to Australia and died of this illness in the 7th Australian General Hospital, Keswick, South Australia on 20 February 1918. He was aged 23 years.
