Description

Portrait of 1872 Private (Pte) Douglas James Freeman, 50th Battalion. A dental mechanic from Gawler, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 3rd Reinforcements from Adelaide on 13 July 1916 aboard HMAT Seang Bee for England. During training in England he was appointed Lance Corporal and then Temporary Corporal but reverted to the ranks before joining his battalion on the Western Front in November 1916. Pte Freeman was killed in action near Noreuil, France, on 2 April 1917 and is buried in the Noreuil Australian Cemetery. His actual grave is not known and his name is recorded on Special Memorial A. He was aged 19 years.
