Studio portrait of 3635 Private Francis Johnston Evans, 50th Battalion. A tram conductor from North Unley, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Melbourne with the 10th Reinforcements on 4 August 1917 aboard HMAT Themistocles for Glasgow, Scotland. After training in England he proceeded to the Western Front and joined his battalion near Ypres in late January 1918. Pte Evans was killed in action near Albert, France, on 5 April 1918 and is buried in the Ribemont Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France. He was aged 27 years.
