Studio portrait of 627 Private (Pte) Percival John Chilman, 10th Battalion. A storeman from Midland Junction, Western Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Adelaide on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) for Suez and landed at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915. He was wounded in action on 2 May 1915 and was evacuated to Egypt for treatment and recuperation before rejoining his battalion in mid-June. Pte Chilman was hospitalised for five weeks from mid-September with a gastric infection and was evacuated to Lemnos for treatment. He then rejoined his unit in late October 1915. The 10th Battalion was withdrawn to Alexandria in late December. In late February 1916 Pte Chilman was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France in mid-June 1916. The day after arrival in France he was hospitalised as the result of an accident and evacuated to England for treatment and recuperation; consequently he did not rejoin his unit until late April 1917. Pte Chilman was killed in action at Messines on 10 June 1917. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Ypres, Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium. He was aged 22 years.
