Studio portrait of 2388 Private (Pte) Thomas Cole, 50th Battalion. A motor driver from Mitcham, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 5th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 21 September 1916 aboard HMAT Commonwealth (A73) for Plymouth, England. Following training with the 13th Training Battalion he proceeded to France in mid-August 1917 to join his battalion on the Western Front near Armentieres. Pte Cole was killed in action near Villers-Bretonneux on 25 April 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 28 years.
