Portrait of 2728 Private (Pte) William Terence Bennett Ball, 10th Battalion. A labourer from Semaphore, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 2 September 1915 aboard HMAT Anchises (A68) for Suez. He was transferred to the 50th Battalion in late February 1916. In mid-April he was admitted to hospital due to illness and then embarked for England. There he joined the 13th Training Battalion before eventually joining his battalion on the Western Front, France, in February 1917. Pte Ball was killed in action near Noreuil on 2 April 1917. His grave and 81 others were destroyed by shellfire and his name is recorded on a special memorial. He was aged 27 years.
