Description

Portrait of 4132 Private (Pte) Sarsfield Andrews, 10th Battalion. A labourer from Millicent, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 13th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 11 January 1916 aboard HMAT Borda (A30) for Suez. In late February 1916 he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocate to the Western Front, France, in early June 1916. Over the next 10 months he was hospitalised on three occasions with influenza related illnesses. Pte Andrews was killed in action at Westhoek Ridge, Belgium, on 27 September 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. He was aged 35 years.
