Studio portrait of 74 Colour Sergeant Charles Alfred Aspinall, 10th Battalion. A warehouseman from Mount Gambier, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with C Company from Adelaide on 20 October 1914 aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) for Egypt. He served at Gallipoli and reverted to the rank of Private (Pte) at his own request on 4 May 1915. He was evacuated to Egypt for medical treatment from early August to late November. Pte Aspinall was transferred to the 50th Battalion on 26 February 1916 and was promoted to Corporal in March then Lance Sergeant in April before the battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, in June 1916. He was promoted to Sergeant (Sgt) in mid-August and two months later was transferred to the 13th Training Battalion in England with the temporary rank of Company Sergeant Major. Sgt Aspinall rejoined his battalion in late April 1917 near Buire, France. Sgt Aspinall was killed in action near Messines, Belgium, on 10 June 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was aged 23 years.
