Studio portrait of 2929 Pte Herbert Walter Hetzel, 50th Battalion. A wheelwright from Gawler, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 7th Reinforcements on 6 November 1916 from Adelaide aboard HMAT Afric (A19) for Plymouth, England. Following training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Becourt. He was promoted to Corporal (Cpl) on 7 September 1917. Cpl Hetzel was killed in action near Zonnebeke on 13 October 1917. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. He was aged 28 years.
