Studio portrait of 3365 Private (Pte) Darrell Horsley, 10th Battalion. A carpenter from Fulham, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Benalla (A24) for Egypt. In early April 1916 he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France in June 1916. He was wounded in action with shell shock in mid-August but was able to re-join his unit three days later. Pte Horsley was wounded in action on the second occasion near Albert, France, on 23 February 1917 and was evacuated to 5th Group Hospital in Rouen where he died of these wounds on 9 March 1917. He was aged 22 years.
