Studio portrait of 3042 Private (Pte) Australia Rangy Jerome Clarke (MM) and Annie Rebecca Grace ...
Studio portrait of 3042 Private (Pte) Australia Rangy Jerome Clarke (MM) and Annie Rebecca Grace Wood on their wedding day. They were married at The Church of the Epiphany, Church of England church, Bangalow, NSW, not long after Pte Clarke's return from active service. Pte Clarke enlisted on 12 August 1915, embarking with the 7th Reinforcements of the 25th Battalion. He was awarded the Military Medal for "conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during operations East of Hamel from 8th to 11th August 1918 he gallantly carried very important messages through heavy machine gun fire. His courage and initiative were beyond all praise". Late in 1918 Pte Clarke was transferred to the 45th Battalion when many battalions were amalgamated due to the inability to supply enough reinforcements. Pte Clarke is wearing an interesting colour patch which is a combination of elements from these two units. The combining of units was a highly charged issue for men who had served the majority of time under one unit and felt intense loyalty to their original battalion, no doubt the reason that this patch was allowed.
