Studio portrait of 1487 Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Richard Samuel Hughes, 35th Battalion, of Merewether, NSW. A shop timekeeper prior to enlisting in January 1916, Hughes embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Benalla (A24) on 1 May 1916. He was killed in action at Passchendaele, Belgium, on 1 October 1917, aged 27. His brother 7000 Private Francis James Hughes served with the 4th Battalion and returned to Australia in March 1919.
