Studio portrait of 2975, later 3208A, Private (Pte) Walter Russell Wigglesworth, 10th Battalion. A gardener from Sturt, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 8th Reinforcements for Adelaide on 2 September 1915 aboard HMAT Anchises for Egypt. He then served at Gallipoli for the final month of the campaign until his unit was withdrawn to Egypt in late December 1915. On 26 February 1916 he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, during early June 1916. Pte Wigglesworth was killed in action near Albert on 16 August 1916. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 28 years.
