Studio portrait of 2749 Private James Roland Tucker, 50th Battalion. A farmer from Rose Park, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked from Adelaide aboard HMAT Port Melbourne on 23 October 1916 for Devonport, England. After a period of training in England he joined his battalion in France on 25 April 1917. Pte Tucker was wounded in action on the first occasion near Ploegsteert, Belgium, on 22 August 1917. After treatment and convalescence he rejoined his battalion near Dickebusch, Belgium. Pte Tucker was wounded in action on the second occasion at Broodseinde Ridge on 16 October 1917. He died later that day at the 17th Casualty Clearing Station and is buried in the Lijssenhoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. He was aged 27 years. His youngest brother, 1581 Pte William Charles Tucker, 32nd Battalion, was killed in action during the Battle of Fromelles on 20 July 1916 (See P09291.146). His younger brother, Lieutenant Francis George Tucker, 43 Battalion, survived the war although severely injured and returned to Australia in February 1920.
