Portrait of 3229 Private (Pte) Samuel Carl Richard Stasinowsky, 50th Battalion. A blacksmith’s striker from Kooringa, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 16 December 1916 aboard HMAT Berrima (A35) for Devonport, England. After training with the 13th Training Battalion at Codford he joined his battalion on the Western Front near Ploegsteert, Belgium in mid-July 1917. Pte Stasinowsky was killed in action at Broodseinde Ridge on 16 October 1917. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. He was aged 21 years.
