Studio portrait of 2019 private (Pte) Harold Swift, 10th Battalion. A labourer from Port Pirie, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 5th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 20 April 1915 aboard HMAT Hororata (A20) for Egypt. He served at Gallipoli from early July 1915 until the battalion was withdrawn to Egypt late the following December. In mid-March 1916 Pte Swift was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, in June 1916. He was hospitalised with illness in early October 1917 and was evacuated to England for treatment, recuperation and furlough before returning to France in late March 1918. Pte Swift was killed in action near Corbie on 8 April 1918. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 30 years.
