Portrait of 3452 Private (Pte) Harold William Richards, 10th Battalion. A clerk from Woodville, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 27 October 1915 aboard HMAT Benalla for Egypt. On 29 February 1916 he was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, during early June. Pte Richards was wounded in action near Amiens and was evacuated to England for treatment, a lengthy recuperation and furlough before eventually rejoining his battalion on 25 September 1917. Two days later he was again evacuated to England with a severely fractured ankle and did not rejoin his unit until 9 May 1918. Pte Richards was killed in action near Villers-Bretonneux on 7 July 1918. He was aged 29 years.
