Portrait of 3452 Lance Corporal (L Cpl) Gustav Henry Phillips, 50th Battalion. A labourer from Ardrossan, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 9th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 10 February 1917 aboard HMAT Seang Bee (A48) for Devonport, England. After three months with the 13th Training Battalion at Codford he then proceeded to the Western Front and joined his battalion near Ploegsteert Wood, Belgium in late August 1917. On 17 January 1918 he was appointed a Lance Corporal (L Cpl). L Cpl Phillips was killed in action near Villers-Bretonneux, France, on 25 April 1918. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial. He was aged 23 years.
