Studio photograph of 2668 Private (Pte) William John Platt, 10th Battalion. A driver from Unley, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 2 September 1915 aboard HMAT Anchises (A68) for Egypt. He served at Gallipoli during December 1915 until the battalion was withdrawn. On 26 February 1916 Pte Platt was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France, during mid-June 1916. He was hospitalised with illness from early July until mid-August 1916. Pte Platt was reported missing in action at Mouquet Farm on 4 September 1916 and was subsequently confirmed to have been killed in action on that date. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, France. He was aged 17 years.
