Studio portrait of 2658 Private (Pte) Reuben Vivian Martin, 10th Battalion. A labourer from Adelaide, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 2 September 1915 aboard HMAT Anchises (A68) for Suez. He served at Gallipoli for the last month of the campaign before the battalion was withdrawn to Egypt in late December 1915. On 26 February 1916 Pte Martin was transferred to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France during June 1916. He was hospitalised with illness for three weeks from mid-July 1916 but was not able to rejoin his unit until early October. Pte Martin was wounded in action near Albert, France, on 26 November 1916 and was evacuated to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, where he died of these wounds on 9 December 1916. He was aged 26 years.
