Studio portrait of 290 Private (Pte) Hugh Craine Kelly, 9th Light Horse Regiment. A farmer from St Peters, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the original contingent from Adelaide on 11 February 1915 aboard HMAT Karroo (A10) for Egypt. His unit moved to Gallipoli in mid-May 1915. On 20 September 1915 he was diagnosed with enteric fever and evacuated initially to Cairo and then repatriated to Australia for treatment and recuperation. He embarked as an Acting Corporal with the 4th Reinforcements of the 50th Battalion from Adelaide on 12 August 1916 aboard HMAT Ballarat (A70) for Devonport, England. On deployment to France he reverted to the rank of Private and was also hospitalised with illness before joining his battalion near Flers, France, on 10 January 1917. Pte Kelly was wounded in action near Bapaume on 2 April 1917 and was evacuated to England for treatment, recuperation and furlough before rejoining his unit near Hazebrouck. Pte Kelly was killed in action at Zonnebeke on 18 October 1917. He has no known grave and he is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. He was aged 25 years.
