Studio portrait of B6799 Corporal (Cpl) Frederick George Jeffries, 10th Australian Infantry Regiment (Volunteer). A plumber from Adelaide, South Australia prior to enlistment in the 27th Battalion as 3526 Private (Pte) Jeffries, he embarked with the 8th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 12 January 1916 aboard HMAT Borda (A30) for Egypt. On 28 February 1916 he was transferred to the 10th Battalion. He was further transferred on 2 April 1916 to the 50th Battalion which relocated to the Western Front, France during the following June. Pte Jeffries was wounded in action near Albert, France, and was evacuated to England for treatment, recuperation and furlough before rejoining his battalion in mid-January 1917. Pte Jeffries was killed in action near Noreuil on 2 April 1917. His grave and 81 others were destroyed by shellfire and his name is recorded on a special memorial in the Noreuil Australian Cemetery. He was aged 28 years.
