Group portrait of four members of the 5th Pioneer Battalion. Identified, from left to right: back row: 3835 Private(Pte) William James Elliott, 3841 Pte James Smith Foggo. Front row: 3821 Pte William Archie Commons, 3857 Pte David Ewart Hollamby. All members embarked with the 10th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 30 October 1917 aboard HMAT Aeneas (A60) for Devonport, England, where they were transferred to the 32nd Battalion. Following training, they proceeded to France where they were transferred to the 48th Battalion. Pte Hollamby, a teacher from Mount Barker, South Australia, prior to enlistment, joined his battalion on the Western Front near Amiens, France. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 28 September 1918. The 48th Battalion remained in the Saint Quentin area following the cessation of hostilities. Pte Hollamby was hospitalised due to illness on 1 December 1918 and was evacuated to 41st Casualty Clearing Station where he died of broncho-pneumonia 11 days later. He was aged 20 years. The other three members survived the war and returned to Australia for discharge on dates from April to November 1919.
