Studio portrait of 2050 Private (Pte) Clarence Rhody Swan Hoffman, 32nd Battalion. A saddler from Adelaide, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with 3rd Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 February 1916 aboard HMAT Miltiades (A28) for Suez. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France in mid-June 1916. Pte Hoffman was reported missing in action at the Battle of Fromelles on 20 July 1916 and was subsequently determined to have been killed in action on that date. He was aged 22 years.
