Studio portrait of 4301 Private (Pte) Joseph Thomas Hill, 32nd Battalion. A gardener from Clare, South Australia, prior to enlistment, he embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Adelaide on 7 November 1916 aboard HMAT Afric (A19) for Plymouth, England. Following training in England he proceeded to France and joined his battalion on the Western Front near Bapaume. He was injured in a training accident on 8 May 1917 and was hospitalised for 12 days. Pte Hill was wounded in action near Amiens, France, on 26 June 1918 and died of these wounds the next day at 61 Casualty Clearing Station. He was aged 32 years.
